Warm blonde hair and highlights on short hair: how to choose your blonde
Warm or cool blonde? How to pick a blonde for your skin tone, how highlights look on short hair and in stripes, and the price at SANLE on Marjanishvili.

Blonde is not one colour. There is warm, honey and golden blonde, cool ash blonde and, in between, neutral "beige" blonde. The right shade lights up the face and makes it look younger; the wrong one gives the skin a greyish or reddish cast. In this article we explain how to choose your blonde, why warm blonde hair is so popular and how blonde highlights on short hair look — including classic striped highlights.
Warm, cool or neutral blonde — what is the difference
The shade of blonde depends on the pigment left in the hair and on toning.
- Warm blonde — honey, golden, caramel, "strawberry blonde". It looks sunny, alive and natural, and it blends well with brown and dark natural hair, so regrowth shows less.
- Cool blonde — ash, platinum, pearl. It looks clean and elegant but needs more upkeep: as soon as yellow appears, you need toning or a purple shampoo.
- Neutral blonde — beige, sand. A middle option that suits almost everyone.
How to choose a blonde for your skin tone
A simple test: look at the veins on your wrist in daylight.
- Green veins — warm skin tone. Your choice is honey, golden and caramel blonde.
- Blue or purple veins — cool tone. Ash, platinum and cool beige suit you.
- Hard to tell — neutral tone. You can try either direction.
Also notice which jewellery suits you better: gold usually goes with a warm tone, silver with a cool one. Still, make the final decision at a consultation, in daylight, together with the stylist.
Why warm blonde hair is so popular
Warm blonde does not demand extra effort. When dark hair is lightened it naturally passes through red, orange and yellow stages — for a warm blonde there is no need to remove that pigment completely, so the hair suffers less. The colour also grows out softly: after two or three months the roots look like a natural gradient, not a harsh line. The result is sun-kissed, "just back from holiday" hair that gives the face a warm glow.
If you have never been blonde, warm highlights are the best start: you change the colour partly and keep your natural base.
Cool blonde and cool-toned highlights
Cool highlights — ash, platinum or pearl strands — look crisp and polished, especially on light brown hair and on people with a cool skin tone. But cool blonde comes with conditions:
- More lightening. To reach a cool shade, the hair has to be lifted to a very pale yellow base and then toned, removing almost all the warm pigment. That is a real strain on dark hair, and sometimes it's safer to get there over several visits.
- More upkeep. A cool tone slowly turns brassy, so you need a purple shampoo once a week and a toner roughly every 4–6 weeks.
- Roots show sooner. On a dark base the regrowth line appears earlier than with warm blonde.
If you want a cooler look without the extra strain, a good middle ground is neutral beige blonde: it reads cleaner than warm blonde, but brassiness shows less. Your stylist will tell you at the consultation whether cool or warm highlights suit your hair.
Blonde highlights on short hair
Many people think highlights only look good on long hair. In fact on short hair — especially a bob — they are even more effective:
- Volume — alternating light and dark strands make even fine hair look thicker;
- Shape — light strands emphasise the line of the cut, especially around the face and at the nape;
- Speed and price — on short hair the treatment is quicker and uses less product;
- Easy upkeep — short hair is cut often, so dry ends never stay with you for long.

Above — highlights on short hair done at SANLE: a sleek bob with warm, golden stripes. It is a classic example of "striped highlights".
Striped highlights: a classic that is coming back
Striped highlights are evenly spaced, clearly visible light strands from root to tip. The 2000s style is now done in a new way:
- the strands are softer and warmer — honey and caramel, not white;
- the stripes have different widths, so the result looks natural;
- a lighter "frame" is often added around the face (face-framing) to brighten it.
Striped highlights look especially good on a straight bob and sleek styling, where every strand shows. If you want a softer, more blended effect, ask the stylist for fine strands — highlights like that look like natural sun-lightened hair.
How to keep warm blonde looking fresh
- Wash with a sulphate-free shampoo for coloured hair;
- use a hair mask once a week — blonde hair needs extra moisture;
- always apply heat protection before straighteners and hairdryers;
- use purple shampoo on warm blonde only rarely — it "cools" the golden tone;
- cover your hair in the sun and at the pool, as chlorine and UV fade the colour;
- refresh highlights roughly every 2–3 months, depending on regrowth.

Frequently asked questions
How much do highlights on short hair cost at SANLE?
Highlights at SANLE cost from 200₾. On short hair the final price is usually lower because less product is used. We will tell you the exact price once we see your hair.
Who does warm blonde suit?
Warm blonde especially suits warm and neutral skin tones, brown and hazel eyes, and people whose natural hair is brown.
Cool or warm blonde — which is better for highlights?
Go by your skin tone and your starting hair colour. Warm blonde is easier on dark hair: less lightening and softer regrowth. Cool blonde suits a cool skin tone and works best on a light base, but it needs toning and purple shampoo. If you're unsure, start with neutral beige.
How long do highlights last?
The light strands do not wash out, but the roots grow. Soft, warm highlights grow out naturally, so a refresh every 2–3 months is enough.
Are striped highlights in fashion now?
Yes — but done the new way: softer, warmer shades and strands of different widths. They are especially popular on a bob and with a lightened frame around the face.
Can I go from dark hair to warm blonde in one visit?
With highlights — often yes, because warm blonde needs less lightening. Going fully blonde may take several stages. Details are in our article on hair lightening.
