Bridal makeup: when to book, how to prepare and what to keep in mind

On your wedding day everything should be perfect — your makeup included. It has to last from morning until late at night, look beautiful in photos and, above all, feel like you. A great result depends largely on planning ahead, so here is a preparation timeline and some practical tips.

Your preparation timeline

2–3 months before

Choose your makeup artist and book the date, especially if your wedding falls in a popular season such as spring or autumn. Start a regular skincare routine now: makeup sits more naturally and lasts longer on well-prepared skin.

1 month before

Have your makeup trial. It's the best chance to settle on the style, the tones and your lip colour in advance. Bring photos of your dress and hairstyle — that way your makeup artist can tailor the makeup to your whole look.

2–3 weeks before

If you're planning lash extensions or brow lamination, now is the time to try the effect. Don't start any new skincare products or intensive peels during this period — your skin could react unexpectedly.

1 week before

Brow lamination or shaping and lash extensions are best done a few days before the wedding, so the result settles naturally. Have your manicure and pedicure one or two days before — gel polish is especially practical here.

The day before

Drink plenty of water, avoid very salty food and alcohol, and go to bed early. In the morning, cleanse and moisturise your skin, and arrive at your makeup artist with a clean face.

Choosing your style

Bridal makeup should be the best version of you, not someone else. A few questions make the choice easier:

• What's the style of the wedding? Classic, minimalist or fairytale — the makeup should match the overall mood.
• What colour are your dress and accessories? Gold details suit warm tones, silver suits cooler ones.
• Which feature do you want to highlight? Usually brides choose one focus — either the eyes or the lips.
• How long is the day? If the ceremony starts in the morning and the party runs late into the night, the makeup needs to be especially long-wearing.

Makeup for photos

The camera sees many details differently from the human eye. So:

• avoid foundations with a high SPF and too much white setting powder — with flash photography they can show up as white patches on the face;
• make the makeup slightly more defined than your everyday look — it appears softer in photos;
• lip liner and a long-wear lipstick hold their shape better in pictures.

Tips to make your makeup last all day

• your makeup artist uses a primer before foundation and a setting spray at the end;
• mascara and eyeliner should be waterproof — tears at a wedding are inevitable;
• pack blotting papers, powder and your lipstick in your bag;
• try not to touch your face.
