Red hair: burgundy, cherry and copper — who it suits and how to keep the colour

Red is the liveliest colour hair can have: it glows in the light, deepens in the shade and changes its mood several times a day. On 5 November we did two of them at SANLE on the same day — dark red for a young man and dark copper blonde for a young woman. Using both as examples, here is which red suits whom, what hair colouring costs at SANLE and what to do so the colour lasts.

Shades of red: which one to choose

Burgundy and dark red

A deep red that looks almost like dark wine in the shade and glows warm in the sun. It is the calmest red: it sits well on naturally dark hair and suits both warm and pink-toned skin. If you are trying red for the first time, start here.

Cherry

A brighter red with a slightly cool, berry-violet tone. It catches the eye and brings colour to the face, and looks best with fair, pink-toned skin.

Copper

Red for men? Why not

Men often shy away from colour, yet dark red looks very natural on short hair. Our guest chose exactly that: dark red colour on a textured crop with a soft taper at the sides. It glows warm in the light and turns wine-red in the shade — see the result in the video.

Dark copper blonde — the soft version of red

If a bright red feels too bold, try dark copper blonde. Our guest's hair is cut in long layers that fall softly around the face. In the light it glows copper, in the shade it turns warm brown — so it never "shouts" in everyday life and looks beautiful in photos. Watch the colour move in the video.

This colour especially suits naturally light brown or dark blonde hair: it blends softly and the roots show less as they grow.

How to keep red hair from fading

1. Don't wash your hair for the first 48 hours — the pigment needs time to set.
2. Cool water — hot water strips red faster than anything.
3. A sulfate-free shampoo for coloured hair, and a mask once a week.
4. Sun and pool water fade colour — wear a hat in summer.
5. Heat protection before the hairdryer and straightener.
6. A refresh every 4–6 weeks — roots and shine back to new.
